What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?
is an NDIS-funded service designed to help individuals with disabilities live independently while receiving the support they need. SIL is ideal for those who require assistance with daily tasks but wish to maintain a level of independence and control over their lives.
SIL provides support for individuals to live as independently as possible, whether in shared accommodation or on their own. This support includes help with:
  • Daily living activities (e.g., cooking, cleaning, personal care)
  • Developing skills for independent living
  • Accessing community activities and services
  • Managing medication and health appointments

What is the goal of SIL?

The goal of Supported Independent Living (SIL) is to help improve the quality of life of individuals who need support by helping them play a central role in their own lives by being able to decide how they carry out their day, which areas they need support with and which skills they can hone independently to be able to thrive and be an active part of the community.

Which Supports Are Included in SIL?

  • Household tasks like housekeeping, grocery shopping, and laundry
  • Dressing and personal hygiene
  • Monitoring of medication schedule
  • Menu planning and meal cooking
  • Travel assistance going to medical appointments, work or social events
  • Training and workshops to develop essential skills and hobbies
  • Overnight support
SIL excludes coverage for daily living expenses such as rent or mortgage payments, bills and groceries, home modifications and improvements.

Choose Where and How You Live

Group Home
In a shared housing setting, you can choose to live with other participants you know who share your support needs, or move in a home that is specially designed and structured for people with a disability.
Individual Living
This is a housing setting where you live alone or with others who are not participants but still receive some level support. An individual living arrangement is best if you are able to live independently and safely with lesser external support needed compared to a group home. Overnight support is also available.
