“You are not alone. You are part of a community of parents who understand and support you.” – Unknown
We at Kairos Care believe that parents are essential members of the care team, reason why we have prepared a training program for parents of children with autism.
Helping families: Training for parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
A diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can understandably be overwhelming for parents, especially those who are first-time parents, and without any training or adequate exposure to autism. Faced with the unfamiliar, stress levels of autism parents can be high. When parents feel they have no control, feel helpless and don't know how to respond, parental wellbeing can be negatively impacted.
Studies have shown that skills training for parents can be beneficial for them as primary carers and for their children with autism. Involving parents in the intervention of their children thru proper training help equip them to respond better to their children's needs, thus minimising parent stress, and ensure that interventions are properly practised at home as a whole-family team.
Interventions to manage behaviors, teach life skills and communication skills are often delegated to special education teachers, behavior therapists, developmental doctors , and other specialists, with parents receiving minimal and quick instructions.
It's time parents are equipped with first-hand practical knowledge that they can apply in their daily lives where real-life situations arise.
